I have to say that, a third of the way through The Blue Afternoon, I'm getting annoyed with the two main characters. I can cope with Salvador as a young doctor in the flashback section, but in his dotage, he's as irritating as anything. And as for Kay's distinct lack of questioning, well, it's almost as bad as Harry Potter's. (But her ex-business partner is a prize bit of nastiness.)

Well I've just noticed that the R&J / British Book Awards sticker on the cover also carried a Galaxy logo. But A.M. Homes' This Book Will Change Your Life, which is also on the R&J list (and with a printed-onto-the-cover R&J medallion - bleurgh), doesn't have an ad in the back.

There's this short editorial in today's Guardian on Boyd and the Costa prize.
Appetiser:

That was a bit sycophantic, in my opinion. Or did I miss some irony?

It seems that a journalist interviewing Boyd has so little to go on in terms of 'colour' that the only angle they can find is to say how nice everything is for him. And frankly if the last really bad thing that he can think of was his parents dying thirty years ago, they could be right. The first paragraph seemed almost intended ironically but not quite.

Pretty feeble piece overall. A little bit about the books might not have gone amiss. Or whether R&J or the Costa is more important to him. And how much did Boyd actually say? Very little of it is actual interview.

I think when the News Review carries anything about literature, it's usually voiced in lit lite terms - like the Style section, the News Review seems to lack teeth sometimes. The book reviews in the Culture section are generally more informative. The inteviewer, Giles Hattersley, is Roy Hattersley's son, so maybe he feels the need to dissociate himself from Old Labour values by wittering about furnishings and lifestyles.

A reply from Bloomsbury's Marketing Director, the curiously named Minna Fry, to my email mentioned in post 69 above:

Quote:
I’m sorry to hear how much you dislike the Galaxy advertisement in the back of the paperback of William Boyd’s Restless. In the normal course of events, we wouldn’t have chosen to put it in but we are so thrilled with Galaxy’s continued support of books and reading that when they pledged £3million towards popularising reading through the Richard & Judy television show, we felt that including the ad was a small price to pay in return.

"Thrilled" presumably meaning "they held a gigantic cheque over our eyes so we didn't know what we were doing."

I am embarrassed to say that for a number of years I have always thought of chocolate anyway when William Boyd is mentioned, because of Stars and Bars...

Col, maybe also because of the flake in a 99 which is conjured up by An Ice Cream War?
